For almost two decades, Sharath Kamal Achantha dominated Indian table tennis, amassing 13 Commonwealth Games medals and two Asian Games medals. Yet, the one achievement that eluded him — an Olympic medal — now fuels his new mission: building champions from the ground up at SK Academy, Chennai, India.
SK Academy is India’s hope with young stars having the energy to win & the hope to be Olympic champion. Young athletes train hard everyday with top coaching staff guiding the young talent & nurturing them to be the best. At the heart of it all is Sharath Kamal & his brother Rajath Kamal, observing, advising, mentoring. SK Academy Instagram is a place to follow to keep looking for what’s happening around the SK Academy.
Reflecting on his transition from player to mentor, Sharath shared with TOI:
“I have won 13 Commonwealth Games medals, two Asian Games medals but the Olympic medal has been elusive. What I could not do, I want to enable the next generation to achieve.”
Every drill, every training session, carries this vision. From perfecting the topspin loop to mental preparation for tight matches, Sharath’s influence is felt at every level.
At SK Academy, stories of determination abound:
These young athletes are not just learning; they’re inheriting a philosophy of excellence, patience, and ambition from the very best of India.
It is possible that Sharath Kamal can turn the tables for India in a similar fashion how Badminton legends such as Pullela Gopichand , Prakash Padukone have made India the top Badminton powerhouse.
