Olympic Champion Fan Zhendong has once again asserted his legendary status, winning the Men’s Singles gold at the 15th National Games of China (2025) in Macao.
In a dominant run that showcased his resilience, power and unrivaled experience, Fan defeated both World No. 1 Wang Chuqin and World No. 2 Lin Shidong on his way to the title.
This marks Fan’s second consecutive National Games singles championship, reaffirming his place among the greatest table tennis champions of the modern era.
Fan Zhendong (Shanghai) path to gold required beating the two top-ranked players in the world. Fan recently played in TTBL in Germany. Fan didn’t participate in WTT events & has been away from top table tennis scene from quite sometime.
Earlier in the day, after losing in semi final, World No. 1 Wang Chuqin (Beijing) secured bronze with a commanding win against Yuan Licen — but it was Fan who outshone everyone on the biggest domestic stage.
Fan ZHENDONG (Shanghai) def. Lin SHIDONG (Hainan)
4–1 (11–9, 8–11, 11–5, 11–3, 11–4)
Despite trailing 4–9 in the opening game, Fan surged back with seven consecutive points, seizing control of the match.
Though Lin Shidong responded by taking the second game, Fan’s unmatched mid-game acceleration and heavy forehand pressure carried him through the remaining three games. Fan backhand against Lin Shidong was also a good battle. Personally, I like the Fan style even though it’s really difficult.
Earlier the same day:
Wang CHUQIN (Beijing) def. Yuan LICEN (Liaoning)
4–1 (11–9, 11–8, 4–11, 11–5, 11–7)
Wang secured bronze, continuing his strong 2025 season.
After the victory, Fan spoke emotionally about the significance of the title:
“At the beginning, I didn’t feel at ease. I kept lifting my performance and I’m delighted to take the gold.
Each National Games represents a new chapter in my career. It’s always difficult to win here. I will keep improving my skills and mentality.”
The 28-year-old is already one of the most accomplished players in history — an Olympic champion, World champion, World Cup champion, and a Grand Slam winner.
Although Lin finished runner-up, he achieved a historic milestone:
Lin said after the match:
“This medal exceeded my expectations. I’m proud to win this honor for Hainan.”
